Umeboshi actually means 'dried ume'. Ume is a Japanese fruit, which is also described in Europe as a plum or an apricot. The flavour is incomparable: strong, salty and sour. Never eaten umeboshi before? It's definitely worth a try! In Japan, umeboshi are often used to season rice and at the same time they are an important part of Japanese tradition. In Japan they say: 'an umeboshi a day keeps the doctor away!'
How to use it
Eat umeboshi like this if you dare(!) or cut into pieces and use as a seasoning in dressings and sauces, with rice or noodles, or in traditional Japanese drinks like ume-sho-bancha.
